How was the year 2015 imagined in the year 1985 when the Back to the Future movie was made?
FUTURE SCEBARIOS ACCORDING TO JAKUB SAMOCHOWIEC: „Future Skills“ is an overview of the future through four possible fictional scena- rios. The scenarios are based on both historical events and today‘s social, eco- nomic, and environmental conditions. The four scenarios are called Collapse, Gig Economy Precariat , Net Zero and Fully Automated AI Luxury. The first of these, Collapse, is based mostly on historical events, and this event is the result of the loss of the state and a sharp population decline. This collapse, according to Samochowiec, is not an intended state. His second scenario, Gig Economy Precariat, is based on the now frequently asked question of whether machines and in particular the development of artificial intelligence, will take people‘s jobs. In the Gig Economy Precariat everyone are still supposedly able to have all the opportunities that we have today but are in fact limited to a small elite. Machines have taken over people‘s working lives so quickly that neither the labor market nor the welfare state can manage. The Net Zero scenario is a non- materialistic world. Consequently what we can freely do nowadays, especially as regards consumption, will be limited in the future according to this scenario. These restrictions will be based on international agreements, which are inter- preted differently in different countries. The world is voluntarily placed in a state with many constraints on the well-being of all. People must reduce carbon emissions to zero as quickly as possible. Rules for self-restriction are established in society. What is hard about this scenario is that the effects of these restric- tions are not felt immediately. But only in hope for the future generations to get a chance to live in this world. Fully Automated AI Luxury describes a world in which machines have taken over much of the work. In this scenario, AIs will help humans in all areas of life, from finding a partner to developing new things. The world is divided into people who keep up with the technology and with a “uselessclass”,nolongerneededbyanybody.Thusthis“uselessclass”,cultivates their community with open source technology and with communal thinking.

We had a discussion about these scenarios on the Miro platform. I prepared some questions for the class and here are the answers to my questions:
DIY CULTURE, SHARING KNOWLEDGE AND INSPIRATION IN SMALLER COMMUNITIES ONLINE AND OFFLINE: „Do it yourself“ is a way of giving new meanings by modifying things by oneself without being a professional or expert. Nowadays DIY culture is changing the sense of creativity to the right of all and not just designers and artists. IKEA hacking is a form of DIY community that reflects on increasingly popular interest in tinkering and customization. DIY is moving from physical garages to web forums and through that, the communities are growing and people can find and rebuilt their identities through them. Previous research in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) argues that creative reuse and customization are important tools in the future world and should be encouraged further to the next generations. In his book Where The Action Is. The Foundations of Embodied Interac- tion. 2004, Paul Dourish writes that our world is meaningful in itself. Its meaning can be found in the way it proves available to us. The world offers us opportunities to find meaning. It is found in the physical and social manifestations of the world. Donald Norman, best known for his work on user-centered design and his book The Design of Everyday things writes about the concept of ‚affordance‘, which means how the object presents itself to the user. DIY brings many opportunities to create new helpful objects from the objects that we can find in our houses and environments without having to buy new stuff. According to the Future Skills article, this is an important skill in the future. The growing popularity of DIY is not only good and many criticise it for its encouragement to create even more stuff for this world that has only a short time of use. The DIY inspirations shared online are mostly very limited to appearance and this may cause the need of buying new stuff to create something exactly similar as in the inspiration post. „Centralised solutions to our problems are not resilient. ONE'S TECHNOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT. MORE SUSTAINABLE DIGITAL DESIGN METHODS FOR INTERFACE DESIGN: We all have a technological footprint and we can make changes to it with our choices. Our digital files are stored on physical servers that constantly use energy and as interaction designers, this is an important factor to look upon when designing something new. Everything digital constantly uses energy. Every file hosted online is stored on a server that requires energy to heat, cool, power, and access. Things we can do to reduce the amount of energy that our design consumes are for example reducing the size of our interface by thinking about the type of content we implement and keeping file sizes to a minimum. Not asking people to create accounts that they rarely use. Use high contrast colours, which are easier to see, so people don’t have to turn up the brightness and waste battery life. We can also choose colours that use the least computing energy to display on the screen. Using scalable vector graphics Animations is the best option for animations because it can be created in CSS and involves only a few lines of code and no image or video files at all. Choose to use a font that is hosted online and doesn‘t have to be downloaded from anywhere. If you are coding your web page it is better to code it static so that the server uses less energy.
